Team Tournament 2012

Greetings Team Captains, This year’s Southwestern Team Disc Golf Invitational will be held on the weekend of Dec 1 and 2. This year we have the same tourney hotel the Best Western Seven Seas. We have reserved a block of 20 rooms and 2 large suites near the heated pool and 2 spa’s on the property. Their phone # is 1-800-328-1618. Tell them you’re with the “Team Tournament”. The rate is $59.25 per night plus tax for a single bed and $64.75 for 2 queens. They allow up to quad occupancy per room. Rooms have a refrigerator and upon request/availability microwaves. The hotel offers free airport shuttle and free shuttle to the SD Zoo and Sea World. The grounds are 12 acres and have a comfortable lush feel. The onsite restaurant opens at 6 am everyday and closes at 10:30 at night. There is a nice bar right next to the pool with flat screen TV’s. They have a pool table in a separate room inside and a new ping pong table outside by the main Jacuzzi as well. We’ve secured late check out of 1 pm on Sunday for those needing it. The cutoff date for getting this special rate is 11-25-12. So make those reservations early. This is our nicest and best priced hotel ever. The hotel is located at 411 Hotel Circle South, San Diego 92108.  Those coming in on I-5 would take I-8 east to the second hotel circle exit. Turn left at the stop sign at end of freeway off ramp and travel 200 yards paralleling freeway to the last hotel on right (Seven Seas Best Western) before the road turns under the freeway.

This year’s entry fees are $80 per player to be paid to the team captains who I’ll meet with on Friday afternoon to give them their swag before the putting contest which starts at 2:30 pm at the course. This year’s player package will include as yet 2 clothing items (an A4 t-shirt and a mystery item), lunch on Saturday (California Kebab), free drawing, mini’s, and all weekend play .

As in the past a tie in the preliminary round robin rounds is broken by individual match points for that round being totaled up. If it remains a tie it will be broken by the #1 player for each of the two teams playing a sudden death match play from hole 1 prior to the finals if and only if the outcome would have an effect on who gets into the finals. Otherwise it remains a tie in the records.

Also as with all round robin tourneys whether they be Disc Golf, DDC or Ultimate the tie breaking method is clearly delineated in the WFDF rule book; The tie breaking scenario is spelled out in the WFDF Official Rules of Flying Disc Sports. ”206.04 Tie Breaking Procedures: In round-robin play, ties in which two teams have identical win/loss records, are broken by virtue of the head-to-head match in that round. If three or more teams are tied, the following procedure is used to advance one team:

A. If one of the teams has the best record against the other teams with whom they are tied in that round, advance that team.

B. If the tie remains, rank the net point totals of each team from those games played against the other tied teams, and advance the team with the best net point total.

If another team must also be advanced, the following procedure is used:

A. If advancement must be decided between two teams which remain from a previous three team tie, the head-to-head match in that round shall be used.”

Our team seeding for this year is as follows:

Arizona-Dan Ginnelly  -azdgc@msn.com

Huntington Beach-Chris Brophy-playdiscgolf33@yahoo.com

Redwood Empire-Roger Cansler  at jahchupa@yahoo.com

Santa Cruz-Jim Hagen at bnjhagen@scbglobal.net

Sylmar-Mike Byrne at discfever@aol.com

San Diego-Micah Dorius at mzdorius @cox.net

Oak Grove-Dago Bribiesca at dagoberto8853@att.com

As always the event is a match play event with the top two teams from the round robin round playing a 19 hole final .  We will have scorecards with the schedule posted on it and maps of both the extra holes and directions to and from the course to the tourney motel posted soon on the morleyfield.com website. The tournament putting contest has $300 cash in it and will be contested at the course starting at 2:30 p.m. on Friday Nov. 30th.

Please remember Morley is a pay to play course as such players arriving at the course on Friday wishing to practice do need to pick up and pay for playbands before beginning practice rounds on Friday.

Thank you and good luck to all,

Z you here,

Snapper

Morley Player Profile: Grace Rivas

Name: Grace Rivas Started playing Disc Golf: I started playing the winter of 2003, a friend of mine introduced me to the game, I remember asking him "what the #$@% is disc golf, after the first round I knew this was the sport for me, no coaches, no teamates, just me and the course, I like to say that I did not find disc golf, disc golf found me, and I love it!

My First Disc: a 180g 3 flyer! it was heavy as a brick, got my first ace with it!!!

Favorite hole at Morley: my favorite hole has to be 10 long, when it's all the way to the back, for some odd reason I can play this hole well, (most of the time, hahaha) it probably helps to be a left handed too.

Favorite Disc:  it has to be the sidewinder, I can throw the son of a gun well and it get's the job done most of the time, star plastic of course, that's why I am sidewinder Grace!!! It's a sexy disc too.

Favorite Midrange: The DGA Squall, because I just learned how to trow it, it's great for those right hand holes, great turn over disc, also a sexy one,

Favorite Putter: It has to be the Innova Rhyno, I love the high lip it's got!

Morley Aces: I have only 2 aces, my first one was on hole 16 b, I was having a bad round, probably + 14 or so, but I shot my 3 flyer straight into the basket and bam, ace baby! a few weeks later I lost the disc and never found it, My 2nd ace was 13 a, a little side arm throw and in it goes, it was with a Discraft 172g I think, I also lost the disc a few months later, I call " the curse of the ace" a few weeks later after my 2nd ace I fracture my left wrist, this was a game changer for me!

In My Bag:

A Rhyno of course

Squall

Sidewinder of course

2 wraith's

Talon 150, well actually 2

Westside King

Legacy Rampage

Discraft Buzz

Valkyrie Champ, (when in doubt throw a Valk.)

Roc to Rock son

Discraft XL Elite Z

Crystal Z Avenger SS

Discraft Nuke

Aviar

- Sling Shot

- Water

- Clip Board

- Rope (don't ask)

- Sun Block

- Pocket Constitution of the U.S. (just in case)

I also have @ disc of each in case I lose one, because they don't come back now a days

Tourney Finishes: I have not played too many tourneys, I placed 8th on August (novice) and one time (years ago I placed 5th, but working on it, if you don't play the tourneys you will never find out what you are made of, then you can work on the glitches of your game!!!

Favorite Disc Golf Website: it has to be The MORLEY LOCOS' PAGE ON FACEBOOK

(I know it's just a page actually) We some times organize bag tags with up to 20+ players. guys and girls can find out who's playing on what day, I also have to mention that the MORLEY LOCOS was founded by Oscar Aceves, Joe "Dirty" Sanchez and my self! ( the FB page was my brainchild and I am proud of it. Not to be mistaken by the MORLEY LOCALS, whom we respect and love too! those folks are also locos in a way, we usually let them tee of first out of respect!

Favorite Pro Players: Avery J. and Nate D., one they are world champs, two (and the most important one) they are humble, polite, respectful and nice, they are cool when you talk to them, they are happy to give you their autograph, they are great ambassadors of the game and they keep it real, there are some clowns here in SD that call themselves pro players and even go as far as saying things like "I am my favorite player... It has to be me.." kind of crap, now this guys have no respect for the game, or it's players, with this being said clowns like this will never be part of one of the most elite clubs in SD "MORLEY LOCOS'

I also like Carlo P. he is just a cool fun guy, (a bad ass too) when I firs started playing he hooked me up with a pair of discs, (back in 03) still have one of those disc! Gracias loco!!!

Tips For Newer Players: putt putt putt putt, then practice putting some more, don't go and buy a new bag with a bunch of discs that you cannot control yet, keep it simple ,driver putter and mid range to start (3 disc) once you can somewhat control the invest in some more, now just because the disc is a pro bad ass disc it does not mean you will know how to trow it, it's not the disc, is the monkey behind it! Try to play with kats that play good so you can pick up a couple of pointers, if you find a disc, take it to the pro shop, you will get a buck for it and is good karma, lot's of disc are not returned and some of the guys and girls are taking that trash personal (including me). Also have fun, if you are not having fun, you are losing the round, remember that at morley even a bad round is a good round, you are out and about kicking it with your friends, doing a little work out and that is great (or any other course in the world) I hope one day we can see this sport on TV, at a more professorial level

Final Thoughts: Lot's of people criticize the sport and call it all sorts of bad names, but you know what? we are working out, maybe even shedding a few ponds and living life at it's fullest, it beats the couch that's for sure! so go out there and work it baby, good for the heart and it will put a smile on that face!

Morley-isms (Just For Laughs)

Some of the Morley-centric term's collected over the years (or made up by the "author" of the article) Bag of skittles – A bag of all candy plastic discs arranged in a rainbow

Morley burger – A JIB Breakfast Jack with hashbrowns in the middle

Cooler mud – place soft, cold, wet cooler on the ground, pick it up, drag it to the next hole, set it on bench. Cooler mud

Mr. Microphone – dude with over-developed vocal cords. Not neccasarily trying to talk loud yet can be heard from most surrounding holes. Guaranteed to cost all players on his card +3 strokes. Usually found obnoxious player but not always.

Baggette – A female bagger

Diaper bag – A brand new bag full of brand new discs

Fo... – the sound you hear .002 seconds before being clocked with a stray disc

The Ray-Ray – The player that makes the run to Rays Liquor to buy supplies for his group. Veteran “Ray-Rays” can leave hole 3 on a crowded weekend, make purchases and return before group tee’s off on said hole 3.

Sears School of Driving Graduates – the picture on the right says it all! -

A Brady Bunch – A group of 6+ fun and friendly family members refusing to break up into two groups

Stoners – See tree. See disc. See disc in tree. See rock. Throw rock. Become hero (or one dollar richer)

“A Tosser” - any disc golfer having not earned the right to empty their bag on hole #19 at Morley (against course etiquette anyway). This “right” is set aside for those that actually possess the physical ability to reach (“park”) or surpass the current pin position(s) on hole #19 with their drives.“Tossers” will confuse most of the following attributes as justification to empty their bag…
- Many “play bands” on their quad-straps, Their tee shot (distance in feet) = (their weight) +15ft, A full Innova Competition bag or larger, “brand spankin new” discs, wearing a Huk-Lab or DD hat or shirt. If you are still not sure if you are a “Tosser” listen for feedback. If you hear “WOWs! after your throws,  you’re good to go. If there is silence or mumbling coming from behind as you walk off the pad, you probably are a “Tosser”. (so no one takes offense, this writer can 1) barely out throw his weight and owns a Huk-Lab tek-dry shirt. I know my place.)

Ball hog – One who collects golf balls on hole #17 from errant shots by the old folks on the ball golf course across the street.

Brown ace – a errant drive from a tee-pad into a thrash can

Pink ace – camping on any short pin placement, repeatedly empting bag, throw after throw until making said “ace”.

Yellow Ace – errant drive from hole #14 making its way into the men’s room

Floppers – An ill advised player wearing flip-flops during their round. May also remove said flip-flops on tee-pad to drive. Que?

Hittin’ the pipes – a roller shot up the middle on hole #17 “interrupted” by one of the two pipes crossing the path. Note: this phenomenon began in early 1990’s as the pipes were previously still beneath the surface.

The out-out houses – Shrubbery on holes #8 and #11

DJ Jazzy Jeff – The un-solicited, self-appointed disc jockey for “HIS” group and all groups two ahead and two back. Usually found spinning House/Techno, Reggae (Bob Marley) - approved, Dave Matthews, cliché 70’s (Zepplin, Dead), Beck, Beasties or NIN. Most played at high volumes on cheap speakers hence ruining a chance anyone “appreciating” his “gift” to others.

Snapper poles – dead thin tree trunks or large branches planted / cemented into the ground to make specific holes more difficult. Prominent on holes #17, #10, #12 and #9

Disc Supremacists – a disc golfer that believes that their brand of disc is the “best” and all others are incompetent.

Bench clearer – a fart while sitting on a Morley bench

Tourists – an out of town disc golfer who starts his introductory sentace with … “Where I’m from …”, usually followed by “there is no pay to play”, or “_________”.Now as San Diego is a tourist destination we greatly appreciate your visit and the income you bring to our great city BUT, please remember that where you are from (Texas, Alabama, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada, Kansas, etc…) property values are much different than in San Diego. Property value in SoCal is equal to a 24k, diamond encrusted crown in comparison to most “out of towners” home property value which is equal to the toy that come in a box of cereal. No offense. jk :)

“Fratters” – Bermuda shorts, tanks tops (usually pastel), neon sun glasses from 7-11 and carrying a styrofoam cooler (possibly also purchased at a 7-11)

Arnold's – “Sun’s out, Gun’s out”.

Walk of shame – the walk to retrieve a pole from the shop after getting stuck in a high tree branch

“Tarzan” a player wearing Toe Shoes to play disc golf. See picture -

The Backstop – the person who parks directly behind position E on Hole #2 thinking they found the holy grail of Morley parking spots.

Herding - Herding is a natural animal/human trait.  In the “disc-golfer” species it presents itself as follows… Tim, Tom, Terry, Tracy, Ted and Kevin all throw from the teepad. Kevin throws a typical very short shot, maybe 75 feet off the teepad. ALL of Kevin’s friends laugh and joke as they ALL walk (usually slowly) to Kevin’s disc where they huddle and witness another short throw. Now ALL of the players walk over to Tim’s disc, still joking with Kevin about his apparent lack of athleticism. ALL of the players stand and watch Tim’s throw, then ALL walk over to Ted’s, ALL over to Kevin’s again, ALL move over to Terry’s, on and on and on, multiply by 19 holes… insanity for the group(s) behind.

---- UPDATED  9 28 12 ----

A Green Ace - any shot to make it through one of the three openings on the cement mural wall into the nursery

A Double Dipper - the player who 1) shoots + 5 or more on average. 2) throws two discs multiple times during a round 3) on his card of 4-6 players and/or 4) with 2-5 groups waiting behind him. Usually rude. (thanks Grace!)
