The Spring Fling 2011 is a “B” tier PDGA points qualifier for the Am Worlds and had a full field of 95 competitors once again this year. The fling was both a SoCal points event and a DGA series event. The first such dual event in southern California’s short disc golf history.7 divisions were hotly contested with 5 divisions having disc baskets for 1st place in that division. The course was laid out to be long and challenging with many risk/reward opportunities. The extremely warm conditions added to the challenge by making discs slipperier and landing areas faster. Scores were much higher than anticipated. In fact, the second round par of 51 for 17 holes had an initial player rating of 973. Since holes 1 and 2 were combined into 1 hole and holes 3 and 4 were also combined the course played much tougher than the first round.

The course is closed to the public for this event and lunch is provided the entrants. There was also a closest to the pin contest on hole 8 won by Dale Chambless of the Men’s division and Jenny Unstead of the Women’s division. During the lunch break the players were able to compete in a “Mondo” throw. We gave away a Mach Lite to Jon Yergler who won the first round and a Fade disc bag and double straps with built in rain jacket to Aaron Van Matre who won the second round. Before the awards were handed out their was a free drawing and 60 items (shirts, hats, towels) donated by Innova, Discraft, and the DGA were won by the lucky contestants who remained. Additional hole sponsors this year were Bobby Martin and the Thursday Poker Group and Mark Madden Construction Co.

It appears that San Diego is finally producing a strong contingent of young players who are ready to move up to the next level. It’s been a dozen years since we’ve had so many high level potential players come along. I attribute this to the formation of the San Diego Aces and the addition of new courses in San Diego. A big thank you goes out to Randy Wylot VP of  the San Diego Aces for his help on the computer. Also, Jim McDowell, Dave Devine, Donny Olow, Glenn Triemstra,  Oscar Garcia and the entire Morley staff for their help in making this event possible.

Disc Golf Under The Lights!

San Diego Ice Bowl at Mission Bay Golf course. February 27th 2011.Charity Disc Golf Event for the San Diego Food Bank The first 72 to register will have the disc golf opportunity of a lifetime! Click Here for registration flyer.

Once a year the disc golf community in San Diego plays in a tournament to help raise food and cash donations for less fortunate families and individuals. This year’s event will be played at the Mission Bay Golf Course and feature an outstanding par 57 temporary course featuring a long 900ft hole from the 18th tee. The design takes advantage of the course’s trees, greens, bunkers, and water, making even the shorter pin positions challenging.  The course plays 7250 Ft.

The Mission Bay Ice Bowl is a PDGA XC tier event. There will be raffle donations from Ballast Point Brewery, Innova Disc Golf, San Diego Aces and a traveler basket from Disc Golf United. Food and beverages will be sold before, during, and after the tournament ( beer will be available for those age 21 and older). Please do not bring your own beer to the course or consume alcohol in the park’s parking lot. Golf carts will be available for $11.50 for each person. In addition to the raffle,  mulligans will be sold for $1 to help raise money for the San Diego Food Bank. Because of time restrictions, mulligans will be limited to 1 per hole for each player and can only be used for drives off the tee pad. Please bring food items for the charity. For every ten food items you bring, you will receive a mulligan.

As part of your entry fee, each player will receive a tournament stamped Innova champion Katana or Wraith. Winners of each division will be awarded a wooden trophy designed and custom made by George Spracklen.

The tournament will be played Feb. 27th from 6pm until 10pm under the lights of Mission Bay Golf Course. Please arrive early. Check in starts at 4pm, players’ meeting starts at 5:15, round starts at 6pm.

Registration forms are available at the Morley Field Pro Shop or San Diego Aces.Com. On line registration is available at PDGA Sign Up. Day of registration will be available if there are spots, registration fills at 72 players.

The event was not without controversy. At the end of round-robbin play there was a 3 way tie for first. The tie breaking scenario is spelled out in the WFDF Official Rules of Flying Disc Sports. "206.04 Tie Breaking Procedures: In round-robbin play, ties in which two teams have identical win/loss records, are broken by virtue of the head-to-head match in that round. If three or more teams are tied, the following procedure is used to advance one team:
A. If one of the teams has the best record against the other teams with whom they are tied in that round, advance that team.
B.If the tie remains, rank the net point totals of each team from those games played against the other tied teams, and advance the team with the best net point total.
If another team must also be advanced, the following procedure is used:
A. If advancement must be decided between two teams which remain from a previous three team tie, the head-to-head match in that round shall be used."
San Diego got in on net point differential and Sylmar got in having beaten Huntington Beach in their preliminary round-robbin match. Huntington Beach was understandably disappointed on missing out on the finals having beaten San Diego 6 (37) vs. Huntington Beach 6 (38) in the preliminary round-robbin round.
